A Legacy of Faith and Influence: Remembering Dr. James Dobson
Dr. James Dobson, the influential clinical psychologist, author, and Christian broadcaster who shaped American evangelical life for decades, has died at the age of 89. Throughout a career spanning more than 50 years, Dobson became one of the nation’s most recognizable advocates for traditional family values, reaching millions through his books, radio programs, and public ministry.
Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dobson founded Focus on the Family in the 1970s, establishing an organization that grew into one of the world’s leading Christian family ministries. After relocating its headquarters to Colorado Springs, Colorado, in 1991, the ministry expanded its global reach through radio broadcasts carried by thousands of stations and translated into numerous languages.
Dobson authored more than 70 books on parenting, marriage, and family life, including the widely read The New Dare to Discipline. His writings and broadcasts emphasized biblical principles, religious liberty, pro-life advocacy, and the importance of strengthening families. Even after stepping down from Focus on the Family in 2010, he remained active through the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute, where he continued writing, broadcasting, and speaking on issues affecting faith and family.
Beyond his ministry, Dobson played a significant role in American public life. Over the years, he advised several U.S. presidents and became an influential voice within the evangelical community on social and cultural issues. As a member of the Evangelical Executive Advisory Board during President Donald Trump’s administration, he helped strengthen ties between conservative Christian leaders and the White House.
Supporters admired Dobson’s unwavering commitment to his Christian beliefs and his advocacy for traditional family values, while critics often disagreed with his positions on social policy. Nevertheless, his influence on religious broadcasting, family ministry, and public discourse remained substantial for generations.
Dr. Dobson is survived by his wife, Shirley, along with his family and countless individuals who were inspired by his teachings. His legacy endures through the institutions he founded, the books he authored, and the lasting impact he had on faith, family, and American evangelical life.
