Rep. Carlos Giménez Resigns From Congressional Friends of Spain Caucus Over Israel Policy Differences
Rep. Carlos A. Giménez (R-Fla.) has resigned as co-chair of the Congressional Friends of Spain Caucus, citing concerns about the Spanish government’s approach toward Israel. His decision highlights growing diplomatic divisions among Western allies as the conflict in the Middle East continues to influence international relations.
In a letter to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Giménez said he made the decision reluctantly, emphasizing the longstanding historical, cultural, and economic partnership between the United States and Spain. He noted that he has consistently supported efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two democratic nations.
Giménez argued that Spain’s recent policies and public statements regarding Israel prevented him from continuing his leadership role in the bipartisan caucus. He criticized the Spanish government for what he described as an approach that places unfair pressure on Israel while it faces ongoing security threats from Hamas, Hezbollah, Iran, and other militant groups.
The Florida congressman also expressed concern over reports that Spain has limited entry for certain Israeli military personnel and government officials while restricting some defense-related cooperation with Israel. He said such actions weaken solidarity among democratic allies.
Spanish officials have maintained that their policies are intended to uphold international law and address humanitarian concerns related to the conflict in Gaza. Giménez’s resignation reflects broader disagreements among Western partners over Middle East policy and its impact on international diplomatic relationships.
