Trump Administration Pursues Iran Deal as Negotiations Continue
The Trump administration is working to finalize a potential agreement with Iran as diplomatic talks continue in Qatar, according to senior U.S. officials. The proposed framework aims to end the conflict while imposing stricter limits on Iran’s nuclear program.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that reopening the Strait of Hormuz remains a top priority, calling the closure of the vital global shipping route “unlawful, illegal, unsustainable for the world, and unacceptable.” Speaking during a visit to India, Rubio said U.S. and Iranian negotiators were making progress but noted that finalizing an agreement could still take time. He reiterated President Donald Trump’s position that the United States seeks “a good deal or no deal.”
Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command confirmed that American forces carried out what it described as self-defense strikes in southern Iran. Military officials said the operation targeted missile sites and vessels allegedly involved in attempts to deploy naval mines near key maritime routes. The strikes were intended to protect U.S. personnel while preserving the broader cease-fire effort.
Iran acknowledged that discussions in Qatar had produced areas of agreement but cautioned that a final deal has not yet been reached. Iranian officials also accused Washington of changing positions during negotiations.
According to senior administration officials, the proposed agreement would require Iran to eliminate its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and accept strict limits on future uranium enrichment. In exchange, the United States would gradually lift its naval blockade and reduce economic sanctions.
