Trump Administration Advances Iran Negotiations as Talks Continue in Qatar
The Trump administration is moving closer to a potential agreement with Iran as diplomatic negotiations continue in Qatar, with officials working to finalize a framework aimed at reducing tensions and addressing concerns over Iran’s nuclear program.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said reopening the Strait of Hormuz remains a key U.S. objective, describing the closure of the vital shipping route as “unlawful, illegal, unsustainable for the world, and unacceptable.” He added that U.S. and Iranian negotiators are making progress but cautioned that completing a final agreement will require additional discussions. Rubio reiterated President Donald Trump’s position that the United States seeks “a good deal or no deal.”
Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command confirmed that American forces conducted what it described as self-defense strikes against missile facilities and vessels in southern Iran. Officials said the operation was intended to protect U.S. personnel and safeguard maritime security while supporting the broader cease-fire effort.
According to senior administration officials, the proposed framework would require Iran to eliminate its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and accept stricter limits on future enrichment activities. In return, the United States would gradually ease sanctions. While key political issues have reportedly been resolved in principle, negotiators continue working on technical details, verification measures, and enforcement provisions before any final agreement is reached.
