😱Facing Younger Primary Challenger, Waters Says No One Is Too Old To Serve

Veteran California Democrat Maxine Waters, currently 87 years old, has explicitly rejected the implementation of age limits for elected officials. Speaking during a Capitol Hill exchange with TMZ producer Jacob WassermanWaters argued that the electorate, not “arbitrary age thresholds,” should dictate who remains in power. She maintained that fitness for office should be determined by a candidate’s documented performance, effectiveness, and accomplishments rather than their chronological age.

When questioned about the potential age concerns regarding 80-year-old Donald TrumpWaters pivoted from the age issue to a critique of his leadership. She accused Trump of “destroying our democracy,” making unkept promises, and enriching himself through cryptocurrency. Even when presented with the hypothetical scenario of a 100-year-old “fighter” seeking office, Waters remained steadfast, asserting that the vote is the ultimate tool for evaluating a leader’s tenure.

This defense of longevity arrives as Waters faces a stiff primary challenge in South L.A., a district she has represented for 35 years. Her challenger, 53-year-old nonprofit executive Myla Rahman, has highlighted a significant relatability gap, noting that the average age in the district is 36. Rahman argues that the community is seeking “new leadership” that understands modern struggles, such as housing affordability and renting, emphasizing that elections should focus on the future rather than the past.

Despite the push for generational change, Waters insists that her experience and energy remain her greatest assets. Her active political presence was recently highlighted by her participation in an anti-ICE protest in Los Angeles. While Waters defended the protesters’ constitutional rights, the demonstration eventually turned violent, leading to arrests and the deployment of tear gas by the LAPD. As the June Democratic primary approaches, the debate over Waters‘ age continues to serve as a microcosm for the broader national conversation regarding the aging leadership in the United States government.
