Leavitt Sets Media Straight With Fact-Check On Joe Biden

Karoline Leavitt Defends Trump Administration’s Changes to White House Press Access

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt is defending the Trump administration’s revised approach to White House media access, describing the changes as an effort to broaden participation and modernize press coverage.

During a discussion with Axios co-founder Mike Allen, Leavitt said the administration is seeking to move away from what it views as the longstanding dominance of a small group of legacy news organizations within the traditional White House press pool. She argued that rotating access among a wider range of news outlets will create a more representative media environment that reflects today’s evolving news landscape.

The discussion included the role of the Associated Press and its chief photographer, Evan Vucci, whose widely recognized photograph taken after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, became one of the defining images of the 2024 campaign. Critics, including members of the White House Correspondents’ Association, have expressed concern that altering the role of major wire services could affect the independence and consistency of White House coverage.

Leavitt rejected those concerns, saying the administration’s objective is to expand, not restrict, media access. She argued that decisions regarding access to the Oval Office and presidential travel should not be determined solely by the White House Correspondents’ Association but should include a broader range of credentialed journalists representing both traditional and emerging media organizations.

According to Leavitt, the policy reflects the changing ways Americans consume news, with digital platforms and independent outlets playing an increasingly significant role in political coverage. She maintained that the administration is not excluding organizations based on political viewpoints but is seeking to provide opportunities for more voices to participate.

The administration has also highlighted President Donald Trump’s frequent engagement with reporters, contrasting it with the lower number of press conferences and interviews conducted by President Joe Biden during a comparable period. Officials argue that the revised media strategy is intended to promote greater public access to presidential communications and government activities.
