White House Correspondents’ Dinner Evacuated Following Armed Security Incident

A major security incident disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., on April 25, 2026, after an armed individual allegedly attempted to breach the event’s security perimeter, prompting the emergency evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, senior government officials, members of Congress, and hundreds of journalists.

The annual event, held at the Washington Hilton, had been underway for only about 20 minutes when federal authorities said the suspect attempted to force his way through a secured checkpoint and advance toward the main ballroom. The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, one of the nation’s most prominent media and political gatherings, draws high-level government officials, journalists, and invited guests each year.

Investigators identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California. According to officials, Allen was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives when he approached the security perimeter, triggering an immediate response from the U.S. Secret Service.

Authorities said Secret Service agents intercepted the suspect inside the hotel lobby before he reached the ballroom. During the confrontation, gunfire was exchanged, and one Secret Service agent was struck at close range. Officials reported that the agent’s ballistic vest prevented life-threatening injuries. The injured agent was transported to a local hospital and was listed in stable condition. Allen sustained minor injuries and was taken into federal custody.

Security personnel quickly evacuated the venue while law enforcement officers conducted a thorough search of the hotel to ensure there were no additional threats. Although organizers initially considered continuing the event, the White House Correspondents’ Association later canceled the remainder of the evening, citing security concerns.

President Trump commended the Secret Service for its rapid response, praising the agency for preventing what officials believe could have been a far more serious incident.

Federal investigators continue to examine the suspect’s background, possible motives, and recent activities. Authorities are also reviewing evidence recovered during searches related to the investigation. At this stage, officials believe Allen acted alone and have found no indication of a broader conspiracy, though the investigation remains ongoing.
