A prominent evangelical leader, psychologist, and former adviser to Donald Trump, James Dobson died Thursday morning at the age of 89. For decades, Dobson was among the most influential voices in American evangelical Christianity, shaping national conversations about faith, family life, and the role of religion in public affairs.
Born in 1936 in Shreveport, Dobson built a nationwide following through radio broadcasting, bestselling books, and public advocacy. His work consistently emphasized the importance of marriage, parenting, and traditional religious values—messages that resonated with millions of families across the United States and internationally. Through his writings and media presence, Dobson emerged as a central figure in the movement promoting the preservation of traditional family values within American culture.
“Dr. Dobson was a pioneer — a man of deep conviction whose voice shaped the way generations view faith, family, and culture,” said Gary Bauer, senior vice president of public policy at the James Dobson Family Institute. In a statement, Bauer praised Dobson’s leadership, describing him as a mentor and counselor whose guidance helped many families navigate periods of rapid social change. Dobson began his professional career as a clinical psychologist before rising to national prominence in the mid-1970s with the founding of Focus on the Family in California. The ministry quickly expanded, becoming one of the most influential platforms for evangelical engagement on family life, parenting, and cultural issues. By the 1980s and 1990s, Dobson’s daily radio program had grown into one of the most widely heard Christian broadcasts in the world. The program aired on more than 4,000 stations across North America, was translated into 27 languages, and reached audiences in over 160 countries. Through his ministry, media presence, and advocacy, Dobson left a lasting imprint on American religious and cultural life, influencing generations of families, faith leaders, and public discussions about values and society.
