Recovery efforts have come to a somber close following a catastrophic mudslide near Lillooet, B.C., along Highway 99, also known as Duffey Lake RoadB.C. Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe confirmed on Saturday that the bodies of three men were retrieved this week, following the earlier recovery of a woman’s body on Monday. This brings the total number of confirmed fatalities to four, resulting from the severe flooding and landslides that devastated the province’s southern region after extreme rainfall.

Despite exhaustive search efforts by the RCMP and search-and-rescue teams, a fourth man remains unaccounted for. Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet noted that adverse weather and hazardous site conditions have significantly hindered operations, leading authorities to conclude the current search phase. Efforts are now shifting toward identifying the deceased and notifying their next of kin. The site remains inaccessible, with no projected timeline for the reopening of the highway. In a heartfelt statement, Lapointe extended her condolences to the families facing sudden loss during what she described as an “incredibly challenging year” for British Columbia. The BC Coroners Service remains committed to investigating the circumstances of these tragedies to provide future safety recommendations. This disaster serves as a grim reminder of the impact of the recent extreme weather events on local communities and infrastructure.
