Vance Leads 2028 Republican Preferences as Rubio Gains Donor Momentum

Recent data from the Center Square Voters’ Voice Poll identifies Vice President JD Vance as the frontrunner for a future Republican presidential nomination. With 36% of the vote, Vance holds nearly double the support of Donald Trump Jr., who follows at 19%. While Vance remains the public favorite, the poll indicates that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is gaining significant traction, emerging as a popular second choice, particularly among independent voters. The administrative dynamics were further explored during a donor event at Mar-a-Lago, where President Donald Trump gauged the room’s sentiment. Although Vance is the populist choice, Rubio received a notably louder ovation from the donor class. Trump offered a stylistic comparison of the two, describing Vance as a “tough” figure who sometimes needs restraint, while characterizing Rubio as operating with a “velvet glove” that remains decisive and effective. This distinction highlights the different political lanes occupied by the two officials within the Trump inner circle. Despite Rubio‘s popularity with donors, public influence polls favor the Vice President. A survey by JL Partners and the Daily Mail suggests that Vance is perceived as the most influential figure in the administration, leading Rubio by seven percentage points. Meanwhile, Rubio’s approval ratings have seen a slight dip to 36%. Despite media speculation regarding a 2028 rivalry, both JD Vance and Marco Rubio have dismissed claims of friction. Vance referred to Rubio as his “closest friend,” while Rubio has publicly pledged to support Vance should he seek the nomination in the future.
