State Senator Mike McDonnell has officially changed his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican after more than forty years of membership. A former firefighter and prominent union leader, McDonnell cited his steadfast pro-life convictions and Catholic faith as the primary drivers behind his decision. He noted that his religious beliefs regarding the sanctity of life increasingly placed him at odds with the Douglas County Democratic Party, eventually leading to an irreparable rift with party leadership.
According to McDonnell, the local organization responded to his voting record by withdrawing political support, barring him from serving as a delegate, and withholding essential party resources. The Nebraska Democratic Party later escalated these tensions by issuing a formal censure against him. McDonnell argued that this disciplinary action was a direct consequence of his refusal to compromise on his core religious values within the legislative chamber. In response, Democratic Party Chair Jane Kleeb clarified that the censure was not an attack on McDonnell’s religious identity, but a reflection of the party’s commitment to reproductive rights and LGBTQ rights. Kleeb stated that the party must uphold its platform, which advocates for healthcare autonomy and protects personal medical decisions from political interference. She emphasized that these values remain central to the Democratic mission in Nebraska. The impact of this switch is profound for Nebraska’s unicameral legislature. With McDonnell joining their ranks, Republicans now hold 33 seats in the 49-member body—the exact number required to overcome a legislative filibuster.
