The resolution, filed on April 6 and referred to the House Judiciary Committee, accuses the President of committing war crimes, murder, and piracy. Larson argues that Trump has systematically usurped the war powers reserved for Congress under Article I of the Constitution, specifically pointing to recent military actions and inflammatory rhetoric concerning Iran.
The core of the impeachment effort centers on the administration’s handling of the Iran crisis. Larson cited a social media warning from the President suggesting a “whole civilization will die tonight” as evidence of an unstable approach to foreign policy. He contends that this “illegal war” has not only endangered American lives but has also negatively impacted the economy. Despite these grave accusations, the measure faces a steep uphill battle in a Republican-controlled House, where leadership remains unlikely to advance the resolution. White House spokesman Davis Ingle dismissed the effort as a “pathetic” political maneuver, echoing sentiments that Democrats have sought impeachment since the beginning of Trump‘s tenure.

Chris Murphy has voiced support for this process, a sentiment echoed by Larson and other lawmakers like Al Green and Shri Thanedar, who introduced their own impeachment measures earlier in 2025. Political analyst Scott McLean of Quinnipiac University suggests these efforts are largely driven by demands from the party’s base. However, the path to removal remains historically difficult; Trump was acquitted in the Senate during two previous impeachment trials, and any new effort would require a similar two-thirds conviction.
Locally, the move reflects internal Democratic dynamics as Larson faces a primary challenge from former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin. Bronin has supported the impeachment, describing the President as a “danger to our country.” Other local figures, such as Hartford Board of Education member Ruth Fortune, have also endorsed the move as “overdue.” While the resolution currently sits in committee without a clear path forward, it underscores a deepening divide over the limits of presidential power and the future of U.S. foreign policy.
