Venezuelan Migrant Arrested After Chicago Student Fatally Shot Near Campus

A fatal shooting along Chicago’s lakefront has left an 18-year-old Loyola University Chicago student dead, sparking grief across the university community and intensifying attention on an ongoing police investigation.

The incident occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. Thursday, when the victim, Sheridan Gorman, was walking with friends near the waterfront. According to authorities, a masked gunman approached and opened fire, striking Gorman in the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gorman, a first-year student from Westchester County, New York, had recently begun her college journey. Her sudden death has deeply affected classmates, faculty, and loved ones. Loyola University Chicago President Mark C. Reed addressed the tragedy in a message to students and staff.

“It is with profound sadness that I write to share that one of our students, Sheridan Gorman, was killed earlier today,” Reed said. “This is a tragic loss, and our hearts go out to her family, loved ones, and all who knew her.”

Police have taken a 25-year-old man into custody in connection with the shooting. However, officials have not yet confirmed whether formal charges have been filed or released full details about the suspect’s identity. Reporting from the Chicago Tribune indicated that investigators were able to locate a potential suspect quickly, aided in part by a “distinct limp” observed during the search.

Some national media outlets have reported that the individual in custody is a Venezuelan migrant, though law enforcement authorities have not fully confirmed those details in official statements tied to the case.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued a detainer request, asking local officials to notify federal agents before any possible release. Federal officials also referenced prior encounters with the individual, including an apprehension by U.S. Border Patrol in 2023 and a later arrest in Chicago related to a nonviolent offense.

The case has drawn national attention, particularly as it intersects with broader debates over immigration enforcement and sanctuary policies. Federal officials have urged increased cooperation between local jurisdictions and immigration authorities, citing concerns about public safety.

Recent data reviewed by The New York Times indicates that immigration enforcement activity has increased in 2026, with ICE arrests averaging more than 1,100 per day nationwide. However, the data also shows regional variation, with some cities experiencing declines or only modest increases in arrests, especially in areas with sanctuary policies.

As investigators continue working to establish the full circumstances of the shooting, the Loyola community is mourning the loss of a young life cut short, while authorities seek answers and accountability in the case.
