Former Top Trump Adviser Passes Away Suddenly

Dr. James Dobson, a leading evangelical figure, psychologist, and former adviser to President Donald Trump, died Thursday morning at the age of 89. For more than half a century, he was a powerful voice in American culture, influencing conversations about family life, parenting, and the role of faith in public life. Born in 1936 in Shreveport, Louisiana, Dobson began his career as a clinical psychologist, specializing in child development and family dynamics. He gained widespread recognition in the 1970s when he founded Focus on the Family in California, an organization that would grow into one of the most influential evangelical ministries in the United States.

At the heart of Dobson’s reach was his daily radio broadcast, which at its height aired on more than 4,000 stations across North America. The program was translated into 27 languages and distributed in over 160 countries, making it one of the most widely heard Christian radio shows globally. Through these broadcasts, Dobson offered practical advice on marriage, parenting, and spiritual growth, earning the trust of millions of listeners. In 1991, Focus on the Family relocated its headquarters to Colorado Springs, Colorado. Under Dobson’s leadership, the organization expanded beyond media into advocacy, becoming a central force in the evangelical movement. It promoted positions on issues such as marriage, religious liberty, and the sanctity of life, while also addressing concerns about cultural trends that Dobson believed threatened traditional family structures. In addition to his broadcasting work, Dobson was a prolific author, writing more than 70 books. Many became bestsellers, including The New Dare to Discipline and When God Doesn’t Make Sense. His writings were widely used by families, churches, and educators, further extending his influence across generations.

After stepping down from Focus on the Family in 2010, Dobson founded the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute. Though smaller in scale, the organization continued his mission through radio programming, digital outreach, and engagement in public policy discussions. Dobson’s influence also extended into politics. Over the years, he advised several U.S. presidents from both parties, including George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Donald Trump. He later served on Trump’s Evangelical Executive Advisory Board, helping strengthen connections between the administration and conservative Christian communities. Supporters credit Dobson with strengthening marriages and guiding parents, while critics challenged some of his positions on social issues. Nonetheless, his role in shaping the intersection of faith, culture, and politics in modern America is widely acknowledged. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley, their two children, daughter-in-law Laura, and two grandchildren. His organization said his legacy will endure.
