Prakazrel “Pras” Michel, the 52-year-old Grammy-winning rapper and founding member of the Fugees, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for orchestrating a massive scheme to funnel illegal foreign funds into Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign. The ruling, delivered by U.S.
District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in Washington, D.C., follows a 2023 trial where Michel was convicted on 10 counts, including conspiracy and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. The high-stakes legal battle drew worldwide attention, featuring testimony from notable figures such as actor Leonardo DiCaprio and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions. During the proceedings, the Justice Department argued for a severe penalty, noting that federal guidelines could justify a life sentence. Prosecutors alleged that Michel “betrayed his country for money” and demonstrated a profound indifference to the risks his actions posed to national interests, fueled primarily by personal greed. Conversely, Michel’s defense attorney, Peter Zeidenberg, argued that the 14-year sentence is “completely disproportionate” to the charges. The defense had requested a much shorter three-year term, asserting that the prosecution’s suggested life sentence was an “absurdly high” penalty usually reserved for deadly terrorism or major drug cartel activity.
