Prakazrel “Pras” Michel, the 52-year-old Grammy-winning rapper and founding member of the Fugees, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for orchestrating a massive scheme to funnel illegal foreign funds into Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign. The ruling, delivered by U.S.

District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in Washington, D.C., follows a 2023 trial where Michel was convicted on 10 counts, including conspiracy and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. The high-stakes legal battle drew worldwide attention, featuring testimony from notable figures such as actor Leonardo DiCaprio and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions. During the proceedings, the Justice Department argued for a severe penalty, noting that federal guidelines could justify a life sentence. Prosecutors alleged that Michel “betrayed his country for money” and demonstrated a profound indifference to the risks his actions posed to national interests, fueled primarily by personal greed. Conversely, Michel’s defense attorney, Peter Zeidenberg, argued that the 14-year sentence is “completely disproportionate” to the charges. The defense had requested a much shorter three-year term, asserting that the prosecution’s suggested life sentence was an “absurdly high” penalty usually reserved for deadly terrorism or major drug cartel activity. While Michel declined to speak at his sentencing, his legal team has confirmed that he intends to appeal both the conviction and the 14-year sentence.
