Legacy of an Evangelical Giant: Dr. James Dobson Passes Away at 89

Dr. James Dobson, a towering figure in American evangelicalism and a former adviser to Donald Trump, has passed away at the age of 89. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, in 1936, Dobson began his professional life as a clinical psychologist before becoming one of the most influential voices in the “family values” movement. For over half a century, his advocacy for faith-centered parenting and traditional marriage shaped the cultural and political fabric of the United States. Dobson’s rise to national prominence began in the mid-1970s when he founded Focus on the Family (FOTF) in California. The organization, which eventually relocated to Colorado Springs, Colorado, became a global hub for evangelical outreach. His daily radio broadcasts reached millions, airing on over 4,000 stations in North America and broadcasting in 27 languages across 160 countries. This massive platform allowed him to mentor generations of parents and establish himself as a primary counselor for Christian families worldwide. Reflecting on his impact, Gary Bauer of the James Dobson Family Institute (JDFI) described Dobson as a pioneer of deep conviction. Throughout his career, Dobson remained a steadfast voice in turbulent times, utilizing his background in psychology to equip families with tools to navigate shifting cultural values. His death marks the conclusion of a prolific era of leadership that successfully integrated religious conviction with mainstream media and political engagement.
