Karoline Leavitt Highlights Trump’s Media Accessibility During Public Discussion
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt defended the Trump administration’s media access policies during a public discussion hosted by Axios co-founder Mike Allen, arguing that President Donald Trump has been significantly more accessible to the press than former President Joe Biden during a comparable period in office.
Responding to questions about changes to the White House press pool, Leavitt said the administration has expanded opportunities for a broader range of news organizations to cover the president. She argued that limiting permanent access for a small number of outlets has created greater transparency and allowed more journalists, including digital media organizations, to participate in White House coverage.
Leavitt also rejected criticism that the administration was attempting to control media access, stating that outlets across the political spectrum continue to receive credentials and report on the administration’s activities. She maintained that the policy is intended to provide equal access rather than favor particular news organizations.
During the discussion, Allen referenced concerns raised by the White House Correspondents’ Association, which has argued that decisions regarding the press pool should remain independent of the government. Leavitt responded that no single organization should determine which journalists receive routine access to the Oval Office or travel with the president.
Leavitt also contrasted Trump’s public engagement with that of former President Joe Biden, citing previously reported statistics showing Trump participated in substantially more press conferences and media interviews during a similar stage of his presidency. She argued that the administration’s approach reflects the evolving media landscape and a commitment to expanding access for a wider variety of news outlets.
