Trump Makes Announcement Regarding Iran Peace Deal

Trump Announces Preliminary U.S.-Iran Peace Agreement as Oil Prices Decline

President Donald Trump announced that the United States and Iran have reached a preliminary peace agreement intended to end months of heightened tensions and establish a framework for broader negotiations. Iranian officials also confirmed that the two sides had finalized a memorandum of understanding, describing it as an important step toward reducing regional instability and advancing diplomatic engagement.

According to statements released by both governments, the memorandum provides for an immediate cessation of military operations and outlines measures to restore maritime activity through the Strait of Hormuz. The agreement also includes plans for the United States to begin lifting its naval blockade of Iranian ports. In addition, both countries have agreed to enter a 60-day negotiating period focused on addressing unresolved issues, including Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions, and the terms of a comprehensive long-term agreement.

President Trump announced the development on his Truth Social platform, calling the agreement a significant diplomatic achievement. He said reopening the Strait of Hormuz would help restore global energy supplies, strengthen regional security, and support international economic stability. Iranian officials also expressed appreciation to Pakistan and Qatar for their diplomatic efforts in facilitating negotiations that contributed to the memorandum.

The announcement received positive reactions from several international leaders. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed the agreement, describing it as a meaningful diplomatic breakthrough with the potential to enhance stability in the Middle East while benefiting the global economy. U.S. Ambassador Michael Waltz also praised the administration’s efforts, stating that the agreement reflected a strategy combining diplomacy with credible deterrence to improve regional security and prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Global financial markets responded swiftly to the news. Oil prices declined as investors anticipated that easing tensions would reduce the likelihood of disruptions to energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important maritime trade routes. Both Brent crude and U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures posted notable losses as traders reacted to expectations that commercial shipping would return to more normal conditions.

While the memorandum represents an important diplomatic milestone, officials from both countries acknowledged that substantial work remains before a comprehensive peace agreement can be finalized. The current framework establishes the foundation for continued negotiations, with progress expected to depend on both governments fulfilling their initial commitments. The coming weeks are likely to determine whether the preliminary agreement can evolve into a lasting settlement addressing the broader political, security, and economic issues that have shaped U.S.-Iran relations for decades.
