U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham Dies at 71 Following Sudden Illness
U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina died Saturday evening at the age of 71 following what his office described as a “brief and sudden illness.”
According to officials, emergency responders were dispatched to Graham’s Capitol Hill residence after a medical emergency. While emergency dispatch records referenced a possible cardiac arrest, no official cause of death has been released. Graham’s family confirmed his passing and requested privacy during this difficult time.
The longtime Republican senator remained active in public service until his final days. Just two days before his death, Graham traveled to Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss ongoing efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. He had also been scheduled to appear on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, which would have marked his 64th appearance on the program.
President Donald Trump paid tribute shortly after the news became public, calling Graham “one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known” and describing him as “a true American Patriot” who would be greatly missed.
Graham represented South Carolina in the U.S. Senate since 2003 after serving in the House of Representatives. Before entering Congress, he spent more than three decades serving in the U.S. Air Force, including the Air Force Reserve, ultimately retiring with the rank of colonel. Throughout his Senate career, he became known for his influential role on national security and foreign policy issues, his strong support for Ukraine following Russia’s invasion, and his prominent role during the 2018 Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Brett Kavanaugh.
Leaders from the United States and around the world offered condolences. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy praised Graham as a steadfast supporter of Ukraine, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remembered him as a devoted friend of Israel. Senate Majority Leader John Thune honored Graham’s decades of service and commitment to America’s allies.
Graham had recently secured the Republican nomination for a fifth Senate term. Under South Carolina law, Gov. Henry McMaster will appoint an interim senator to serve until the winner of the November election takes office, while Republicans will hold a special primary to select a new nominee.
Lindsey Graham’s death marks the end of more than two decades in the Senate and a lifetime of military and public service, leaving a lasting impact on American politics and foreign policy.
