The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City has issued a shelter-in-place advisory for American citizens in several Mexican states following the deaths of two U.S. Embassy personnel and two Mexican law enforcement officers during what officials described as an accident after a major anti-drug operation.
U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson expressed condolences, honoring the dedication of the victims and emphasizing the dangers faced by U.S. and Mexican officials working to combat organized crime. He said the tragedy reinforces both nations’ commitment to strengthening security cooperation and protecting their communities.
According to Mexican authorities, the victims were returning from an operation that dismantled six large-scale clandestine synthetic drug laboratories in the state of Chihuahua after a three-month investigation. Officials described one of the facilities as among the largest ever discovered in Mexico, containing industrial equipment, chemical precursors, and worker housing used for methamphetamine production.
The Chihuahua State Attorney General’s Office identified the fallen Mexican officers as Pedro Román Oseguera Cervantes, director of the State Investigation Agency, and agent Manuel Genaro Méndez Montes, both of whom died in the line of duty. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the accident involving the U.S. Embassy personnel.
The advisory follows recent security concerns in Mexico after operations targeting major cartel figures sparked violent retaliatory attacks in several regions. Incidents including roadblocks, burning vehicles, and clashes with security forces have affected areas in Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Guerrero, and Nuevo León.
The U.S. Embassy is advising American citizens in affected areas to remain at their residences or hotels, avoid crowds and law enforcement activity, limit unnecessary travel, and closely monitor official updates until local security conditions improve.
