Ashley Biden Files for Divorce After 13 Years of Marriage

Ashley Biden, daughter of former President Joe Biden, has filed for divorce from her husband, Dr. Howard Krein, after 13 years of marriage, according to court records filed in Philadelphia.

The 44-year-old submitted a divorce petition to the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas on Monday. Ashley Biden and Krein were married in June 2012 in Greenville, Delaware, after being introduced by Ashley’s late brother, Beau Biden, in 2010.

Because divorce proceedings in the jurisdiction are sealed, the court filing does not disclose the reasons for the couple’s separation. Neither Ashley Biden nor Krein has publicly commented on the filing.

Throughout their marriage, the couple maintained a relatively private life despite Ashley’s connection to one of the nation’s most prominent political families. While Dr. Krein continued his work as a plastic surgeon, Ashley focused on nonprofit leadership, social advocacy, and initiatives addressing criminal justice reform, mental health, and community development.

During the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Ashley reflected fondly on her wedding while introducing her father. She recalled that Joe Biden, then serving as vice president, played an active role in planning the celebration and helped organize many aspects of the reception.

On the same day the divorce petition was filed, Ashley shared a post on Instagram featuring a photograph of herself walking through a park while giving a thumbs-up gesture. Accompanied by Beyoncé’s song Freedom, the post included a message about embracing change, writing, “New life, new beginnings, means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before.”

Although the message prompted speculation online, Ashley did not reference the divorce directly.

With the court proceedings remaining confidential under Pennsylvania law, additional details regarding the separation have not been made public. At this time, the filing marks the only official confirmation that the couple has begun the legal process to end their marriage.
