Leavitt Says Dems ‘Fell Right Into’ Trump’s State Of The Union ‘Trap’…See more

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt sharply criticized Democratic lawmakers following President Donald Trumps recent State of the Union address, arguing that their reactions during the speech revealed deep divisions over immigration and public safety policy.

According to Leavitt, several Democrats fell into what she described as a political “trap” set by the president when he recognized victims of crimes involving undocumented immigrants during the address. She contended that the response from some Democratic lawmakers—particularly their refusal to stand during certain moments—highlighted what she believes is a broader disagreement about how immigration enforcement should be handled in the United States. Leavitt also pointed to immigration policies implemented during the administration of Joe Biden, claiming those policies contributed to increased unauthorized crossings at the southern border. In her remarks, she argued that the administration’s approach allowed millions of migrants to enter the country and criticized what she described as lenient policies toward individuals with criminal histories. One of the moments that drew particular attention involved victims recognized by Trump during the speech, including Zarutska and Dalilah Coleman, who suffered long-term brain injuries after a crash involving a truck driver reported to be in the country illegally. Leavitt said the Democrats’ refusal to stand in recognition of such victims demonstrated a lack of concern for the safety of American citizens. She praised Trump’s decision to highlight these cases during the address and described the president’s challenge—asking lawmakers to stand if they prioritized American citizens over undocumented immigrants—as a politically effective moment. The speech also reflected heightened tensions within the chamber. During the address, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries struggled at times to maintain order as several Democratic lawmakers voiced objections, and a few left the chamber in protest. In response, Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar criticized Trump’s remarks and accused his immigration policies of contributing to harm affecting U.S. citizens, underscoring the sharp partisan divide surrounding immigration and national security issues.
