WHCA Dinner Canceled After Security Incident Forces Evacuation of President and Guests
The annual White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner, one of Washington’s most prominent gatherings of journalists, government officials, and political leaders, was abruptly canceled Saturday evening following a serious security incident at the Washington Hilton.
The disruption occurred as attendees gathered for the traditional event, prompting an immediate evacuation of President Donald Trump, the First Lady, senior administration officials, members of Congress, and hundreds of guests. What began as a celebration of journalism and public discourse quickly turned into a scene of confusion as law enforcement and security personnel responded to a potential threat.
Authorities identified the suspect as Cole Allen, who was apprehended inside the hotel lobby after allegedly attempting to approach a secured area. According to police, Allen was armed with a shotgun and multiple knives. Secret Service agents quickly intervened and took the suspect into custody before he could reach protected individuals.
Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll stated that preliminary findings indicate Allen acted alone and that investigators have found no evidence of a broader threat. Officials continue to examine the suspect’s background and possible motives.
During the confrontation, a Secret Service agent was shot and injured. President Trump later confirmed that the agent survived the encounter, crediting the protection provided by a bulletproof vest. The President praised the rapid response of law enforcement officers and security personnel, noting that their actions prevented the situation from escalating further.
Speaking after the incident, Trump reflected on the atmosphere among those present, describing a sense of unity that emerged during the crisis. He said attendees from across the political spectrum came together in a shared moment of resilience despite the frightening circumstances.
Although organizers initially considered continuing the evening’s program, the WHCA ultimately announced the event’s cancellation. The incident has prompted a review of security procedures for major political and media gatherings in the nation’s capital.
