The U.S. Navy is mourning the tragic loss of two distinguished aviators following a fatal crash involving an EA-18G Growler near Mount RainierWashington. The incident occurred during a routine training mission, leading to a complex recovery operation in the rugged, forested terrain east of the mountain. Federal investigators are now working to determine the cause of the crash, which has sent shockwaves through the military aviation community.

The fallen crew members were identified as Lt. Cmdr. Lyndsay P. Evans and Lt. Serena N. Wileman, both 31-year-old residents of California. Based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, they were members of the Electronic Attack Squadron 130, famously known as the “Zappers.” Evans was a celebrated Naval Flight Officer who made history in 2023 as part of the first all-female flyover at Super Bowl LVIIWileman, a highly decorated Naval Aviator, earned several honors during her service, including the Combat Action Ribbon and the Navy Unit Commendation Medal. Recovery efforts have proven difficult due to the wreckage being located at an altitude of approximately 6,000 feet in steep, heavily wooded terrain. Governor Jay Inslee has authorized the National Guard to provide 24-hour security at the site while the Navy prepares for a long-term salvage and investigation process. The EA-18G Growler, a specialized electronic warfare aircraft valued at $67 million, is a cornerstone of the Navy’s aerial capabilities, making the sudden loss particularly significant for the fleet. Political leaders and military officials have expressed deep condolences, highlighting the aviators’ impact on the service. U.S. Senator Patty Murray praised the pair as pioneering leaders who broke barriers for women in the military. As the investigation continues, the legacy of Evans and Wileman remains defined by their courage and their roles in paving the way for future generations of female combat aviators.
