Vice President JD Vance has reaffirmed that the United States has no intention of becoming involved in a prolonged war in the Middle East if President Donald Trump authorizes further military action against Iran.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force Two on Thursday, Vance emphasized that the administration is not considering a long-term military occupation or a nation-building effort in Iran involving large numbers of U.S. troops on the ground. He stressed that fears of the United States entering an open-ended regional conflict are unfounded. āThe idea that weāre going to be in a Middle Eastern war for years with no end in sightāthere is no chance that will happen,ā Vance said in an interview with The Washington Post.
U.S. officials have consistently argued that Iranās uranium enrichment activities could provide a pathway to developing nuclear weapons. Washington has repeatedly stated that Iran must not be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon. Following an appearance on āJesse Watters Primetimeā earlier in the week, Vance reiterated the administrationās stance on social media, writing that President Trump would not commit the United States to a lengthy conflict without clear objectives. He added that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remains the central goal of current operations. Meanwhile, the U.S.āIran conflict entered its third day Tuesday, with rising American casualties and expanding Israeli strikes. The United Nations confirmed that at least one Iranian nuclear facility has been damaged since the beginning of joint U.S.āIsraeli operations. The U.S. military also reported that six American service members have been killed in the fighting.
