Trump Alleges CA Primary Election Theft Amid Delayed Mail Ballot Count

Former President Donald Trump has launched a series of blistering accusations against the Democratic party, alleging systematic efforts to “steal” the results of California’s recent primary elections. Focusing specifically on the jungle primaries for the California Governor and the Los Angeles Mayor, Trump utilized his platform on Truth Social to claim that delayed tallies are a facade for widespread fraud. He asserted that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Los Angeles is investigating the situation, questioning why the vote-counting process remains at a standstill days after the polls closed. According to state officials and reports from the Washington Times, the massive influx of mail-in ballots is the primary cause for the delay, with warnings that a final count could take several weeks to materialize.

In his characteristic style, Trump leveraged the controversy to champion the Save America Act. This proposed legislative overhaul aims to transform national election procedures by mandating photo ID for all voters, requiring definitive proof of U.S. citizenship, and placing strict limitations on the use of mail-in ballots. Beyond election integrity, the former president tied the act to broader social and cultural issues, including the prohibition of transgender surgeries for children and the exclusion of biological men from women’s sports. His rhetoric frames the California situation not merely as a local administrative failure, but as a critical catalyst for a national legislative shift toward more restrictive voting laws.

Defending the pace of the count, Governor Gavin Newsom and his administration released a defense strategy featuring CNN correspondent Elex Michaelson. They argue that California’s slow process is effectively “baked into state law,” designed to prioritize voter participation and decision-making time over sheer speed. Michaelson’s narrative included a pointed critique of leaders such as Ron DeSantis of Florida and Greg Abbott of Texas, suggesting that their focus on counting ballots quickly comes at the expense of giving residents sufficient time to weigh their options. However, this defense has faced intense backlash from critics who argue that the state’s election system, which underwent wholesale changes in 2016, creates a dangerous perception of corruption and a lack of security.

The controversy is currently centered on the Los Angeles mayoral race, where shifting numbers have caused significant alarm among political observers. While initial results suggested a runoff between the incumbent Karen Bass and the Republican candidate Spencer Pratt, a sudden surge in late mail-in votes has favored the leftist candidate Nithya Raman. Despite Raman’s own emotional admission of a likely defeat on election night, her subsequent surge in electoral prediction markets has raised eyebrows. Jarrett Stepman of The Daily Signal notes that while the current system is undoubtedly “accessible,” the failure to deliver results in a timely manner undermines the public’s expectation of a free and fair election, ultimately fostering a climate of suspicion that critics say is justified.
