Utilizing his Truth Social platform, Trump expressed that while the United States is currently engaged in “serious discussions” with a “new, and more reasonable” regime, he is prepared to authorize the complete destruction of Iran’s electric generating plants, oil wells, and Kharg Island. The President also suggested that desalinization plants could be targeted if the Strait of Hormuz is not immediately reopened for international commerce.
The administration’s aggressive rhetoric is framed as retribution for the deaths of American soldiers and others during what Trump characterized as the “47-year Reign of Terror” under the previous leadership. Despite the threats, Trump confirmed he has temporarily paused strikes on power infrastructure to allow for a 15-point peace proposal to be reviewed by Tehran. Special envoy Steve Witkoff remains hopeful that these talks will resolve the conflict, which began on February 28 as a joint operation between the United States and Israel. This military campaign has already resulted in the deaths of several senior Iranian leaders and significant damage to industrial sites. Secretary of State Marco Rubio provided further context following a meeting with G7 foreign ministers in France, stating that U.S. military operations are meeting objectives ahead of schedule. Rubio projected that the conflict could conclude within weeks rather than months. However, he noted a degree of uncertainty regarding the current Iranian power structure, stating that the U.S. is still waiting for clarification on which representatives have the authority to negotiate. This diplomatic opening comes as Iran continues to experience what the President described as the “decimation” of its internal systems. The situation remains precarious as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has countered with threats of its own, vowing to strike infrastructure tied to the U.S. and Israel throughout the region. Tensions are particularly high in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas. The G7 nations have called for the restoration of full navigation rights as reports emerge that Iran has begun charging vessels for safe passage. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned that Tehran will impose a “heavy price” for strikes on its nuclear and industrial facilities, even as the Trump administration pushes for a definitive end to the hostilities.
