Dan Newhouse, a Republican who represents Washington’s 4th Congressional District and was among the House Republicans who voted to impeach Donald Trump following the January 6 United States Capitol attack, announced Wednesday that he will not seek reelection in 2026, bringing an end to a political career in Washington state and Congress that spans roughly three decades.

In a written statement, Newhouse said serving the people of central Washington has been the “honor of my life.”I am announcing today that I will not seek reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives,” Newhouse said. “Serving the Fourth District of Washington has been the honor of my life, and this decision comes with no reservations or remorse—only gratitude for the tremendous opportunity to have represented my home state in Congress.”

Newhouse also thanked constituents and colleagues “on both sides of the aisle,” reflecting on more than two decades in public service that began in the Washington state legislature. He noted that public service can take many forms and said he looks forward to continuing to support his community in new ways after leaving Congress. As I look ahead to the next chapter, I do so with confidence that qualified and serious individuals are ready to step forward,” he said. “Central Washington will have a strong and capable leader to whom I can pass the torch.” Now 69, Newhouse has represented Washington’s 4th congressional district since 2015. The district covers much of central and eastern Washington, including Douglas, Okanogan, Grant, Yakima, Benton, and Klickitat counties, as well as portions of Adams and Franklin counties. Before entering Congress, Newhouse worked as a farmer and served as director of the Washington State Department of Agriculture. During his time in office, he developed a reputation as a pragmatic conservative with a focus on agriculture, water policy, and rural economic development. His tenure, however, will also be remembered for his vote to impeach Trump following the events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
