Former President Barack Obama this week voiced support for a proposed congressional redistricting effort in Virginia, a position that has drawn criticism from some Republican leaders who argue it contrasts with his earlier objections to similar efforts in Texas.

Writing on the social media platform X on Thursday, Obama emphasized the importance of democratic processes. “Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. But right now, they’re under attack,” he wrote. Obama has also expressed support for redistricting efforts in California that could significantly reshape the state’s congressional map. Critics note that such proposals could reduce the number of districts currently represented by Republicans, even though Donald Trump received nearly 39 percent of the vote in the state during the 2024 presidential election. Previously, Obama criticized Republican-led redistricting efforts in Texas. In a social media post, he argued that proposed changes there could allow Republicans to secure additional seats in future elections. “This is a power grab that undermines our democracy,” he wrote at the time. In contrast, Obama described Virginia’s proposal as an opportunity to counterbalance similar moves in other states. In a message encouraging voter participation, he wrote that several Republican-controlled states had redrawn congressional maps to gain an advantage in upcoming elections and that Virginia could “help level the playing field.” He also reminded residents that early voting had begun and urged them to participate.

Republican lawmakers responded quickly. Mike Lee commented on X that Democrats often describe redistricting as “gerrymandering” when it occurs in Republican-led states but view similar actions differently when undertaken by Democrats. During his presidency, Obama frequently advocated for reforms aimed at reducing partisan redistricting. In 2016, he argued that the United States should end the practice of drawing congressional districts in ways that allow politicians to effectively choose their voters rather than voters choosing their representatives.
