President Donald Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk have voiced intense public outrage following a controversial sentencing decision in Washington, D.C. Two 15-year-olds, charged in connection with a violent assault on former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) staffer Edward Coristine, were spared jail time, sparking a national conversation about juvenile justice and urban safety. The victim, popularly known by the moniker “Big Balls,” was attacked during an attempted carjacking in the Logan Circle neighborhood last August, an event that has now become a central theme in the administration’s “law and order” narrative.

The sentences were handed down by Associate Judge Kendra Briggs of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Despite the violent nature of the crime—which Coristine described as a group attack involving up to ten individuals—Judge Briggs opted for probation. The male defendant was sentenced to 12 months of probation with home confinement, while the female defendant received nine months in a youth shelter. Judge Briggs, a Biden appointee, explicitly stated that the goal of the juvenile system is rehabilitation rather than punishment, a stance that has drawn sharp criticism from those who believe the ruling fails to protect the public. In a characteristically blunt response, President Trump condemned the judge’s decision from outside the White House. He characterized the assault as a brutal “beating” and argued that the judge should be ashamed of the lenient outcome. The president used the opportunity to reiterate his policy of federalizing the District of Columbia and deploying National Guard troops to stabilize the city. This strategy is part of a larger plan by the Trump administration to intervene in Democratic-led cities like Chicago and Portland, though these efforts are currently entangled in various legal challenges regarding federal authority versus local control. Elon Musk took his frustrations to X, the social media platform he owns, where he accused Judge Briggs of bias. Musk claimed that the verdict was a “racist— double standard, asserting that white teenagers would have certainly been imprisoned for the same offense. His sentiments were amplified by influential conservative accounts, such as Libs of TikTok and The MAGA Voice, the latter of which called for the judge’s disbarment. Meanwhile, Edward Coristine reminded the public that eight other assailants remain at large, warning that the group had previously engaged in similar acts of violence, including “breaking ribs and stomping heads.” Adding to the administration’s official stance, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt appeared on The Charlie Kirk Show to decry what she described as a “slap on the wrist” for violent juveniles. Leavitt emphasized that the current administration is committed to a fundamental shift in philosophy, prioritizing strict enforcement over the rehabilitative models currently favored by the D.C. judiciary. While the Trump administration continues to push for a heavy-handed federal presence in crime-ridden areas, they face ongoing resistance from local officials who argue that these moves infringe upon constitutional principles of local governance.
