More than 160 House Democrats voted Thursday against two House measures aimed at limiting foreign influence in U.S. educational institutions, highlighting ongoing divisions in Congress over how to address international involvement in American schools. Despite the opposition, both bills ultimately passed with bipartisan support.

During an interview with Fox News, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries explained his concerns about the legislation. Jeffries said lawmakers should prioritize strengthening core educational outcomes rather than engaging in partisan disputes.

We just want to educate our children, focus on reading, writing and arithmetic, developing a holistic child, giving them the ability to think critically,” Jeffries said. He also criticized Republican education policies, arguing that the party has undermined federal education programs. According to Jeffries, the United States Department of Education has been significantly reduced compared with the previous year.

Jeffries further accused Republicans of “attacking public education,” as well as broader public institutions such as public health and public safety.

One of the bills, introduced by Kevin Hern, would prevent federal funding from going to elementary and secondary schools that participate in programs, cultural exchanges, or classroom activities financed by the Chinese government. The measure would also block funds from schools receiving direct or indirect support from individuals or organizations linked to China.

The proposal passed the House by a vote of 247–166, with 33 Democrats joining Republicans in support.
