Marriage Certificate and Federal Filing Draw Attention to Ilhan Omar’s Records
A certified marriage record from London’s Camden district documents a 1997 marriage and lists the bride’s father as “Nur Said Elmi,” whose occupation is recorded as “Military Officer.” The certified copy is dated October 19, 2026. However, the document does not identify Ahmed Nur Said Elmi’s parents or establish that he and U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar are siblings.
Minnesota marriage records cited by MPR News show that Omar legally married Ahmed Elmi in 2009. The historical records have fueled public debate, but the documents described in the reports do not independently establish a sibling relationship.
Federal Court Filing Uses the Name Elmi
In an October 21, 2026, court filing, federal prosecutors identified the congresswoman as “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” The abbreviation “a/k/a” means “also known as.”
The filing seeks additional time to respond to three applications requesting access to sealed records related to a search warrant involving Omar’s Washington, D.C., home. The applicants include news organizations and Judicial Watch. Prosecutors proposed a response schedule tied to the completion of the warrant’s execution or, alternatively, a November 9 deadline.
The filing does not explain why the Elmi name was used, nor does it contain a judicial finding that Omar committed identity fraud.
Omar Rejects the Allegations
A spokesperson for Omar’s office told Fox News Digital that claims challenging her name were false, stating, “Ilhan Omar is her real name.”
Omar has also previously rejected allegations that Ahmed Elmi is her brother, describing the insinuations as “absurd and offensive” in a 2016 statement reported by MPR News.
Separately, The Dallas Express reported on allegations that investigators had obtained DNA evidence as part of an inquiry into whether Omar married her brother. However, the reporting cited here does not provide publicly available laboratory results establishing a biological sibling relationship.
What the records establish: The marriage documents and federal filing contain the names and details described above. They do not, on their own, prove that Omar and Ahmed Elmi are siblings or that she engaged in identity fraud. Those claims should not be presented as established facts without independently verified evidence.
