Navy Identifies Two Aviators Killed in EA-18G Growler Crash Near Mount Rainier
The U.S. Navy has identified the two aviators who died in the crash of an EA-18G Growler during a routine training mission near Mount Rainier, Washington. Lt. Cmdr. Lyndsay P. Evans and Lt. Serena N. Wileman, both 31, served with Electronic Attack Squadron 130, known as the “Zappers,” based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.
Evans, a Naval Flight Officer, was recognized as a trailblazer in naval aviation and participated in the first all-female Super Bowl LVII flyover in 2023. Wileman, a Naval Aviator, earned multiple military honors, including the Navy Unit Commendation Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon, for her distinguished service.
Recovery efforts are underway in the rugged Cascade Mountains, where the aircraft wreckage was found at an elevation of about 6,000 feet. The operation shifted from search-and-rescue to recovery after officials confirmed both crew members had died. Washington Governor Jay Inslee authorized the National Guard to provide security while Navy recovery teams work in the challenging terrain.
The EA-18G Growler, an advanced electronic warfare aircraft derived from the F/A-18 Super Hornet, was conducting a scheduled training flight when the crash occurred. Military officials have launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
The tragedy has prompted tributes from military leaders and elected officials, who praised Evans and Wileman for their dedication, professionalism, and lasting contributions to U.S. naval aviation.
