Republican lawmakers have accused their Democratic counterparts of undermining national security by attempting to reopen only select portions of the agency. Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso of Wyoming criticized the strategy of “peeling apart” the department piece by piece, arguing that such a fragmented approach leaves the American people vulnerable at a time when national security warnings are at a critical level.
Conversely, Democratic leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York, are pushing for separate legislative measures to restore funding for vital sub-agencies like the TSA and FEMA. Schumer argued against using airport employees and citizens as political “hostages” in the broader budgetary dispute. However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota countered that Republicans have repeatedly offered temporary funding measures to keep the entire department operational while ICE budget negotiations proceed, claiming these efforts were consistently blocked by the opposition. This legislative deadlock is now triggering internal divisions within the Democratic Party. Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan recently signaled a shift toward supporting full DHS funding, a change in stance prompted by a recent terror attack in her home state. As the shutdown persists, lawmakers like Senator Jacky Rosen of Nevada have highlighted the growing toll on travelers and federal staff, accusing the GOP of politicizing essential TSA operations while the United States remains caught in a high-stakes partisan stalemate.
