U.S. Navy Concludes Search for Missing Sailor After MH-60S Helicopter Emergency Landing
The U.S. Navy has concluded an extensive search for a missing sailor following the emergency water landing of an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter in the Arabian Sea, ending a rescue effort that lasted more than 102 hours and covered over 14,000 square miles of ocean.
According to the Navy, four crew members were rescued from the water and survived the incident. However, despite the large-scale search involving both Navy and Air Force assets, the fifth crew member was not found. The sailor’s identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, in accordance with military policy.
The helicopter, assigned to the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush, made the emergency landing at approximately 3:30 a.m. Eastern Time while operating within the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility. Military officials said there is currently no evidence that hostile action contributed to the incident, though the cause remains under investigation.
In a statement, the U.S. 5th Fleet confirmed that search operations had concluded after an extensive, coordinated effort.
“For more than 102 hours, an extensive and coordinated search and rescue effort spanning over 14,000 square miles was conducted,” the command said.
Officials have released few additional details regarding what led to the emergency landing or why one crew member remains missing while the others survived. A formal investigation is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to reports, three of the rescued sailors sustained injuries during the emergency landing and were reported to be in stable condition aboard the USS George H.W. Bush.
The MH-60S Sea Hawk is one of the Navy’s primary multi-mission helicopters, supporting logistics, search-and-rescue operations, combat support, medical evacuation, and special operations. It is widely deployed aboard U.S. Navy ships around the world.
The incident occurred amid ongoing U.S. military operations in the Middle East, where American forces continue to operate in a complex security environment. However, military officials emphasized that there is currently no indication the helicopter’s emergency landing resulted from enemy action.
The conclusion of the search marks the end of a difficult mission for the service members involved. While the rescue effort has ended, investigators will continue examining the circumstances that led to the emergency landing. Navy officials have pledged to provide additional information as the investigation progresses and after the missing sailor’s family has been fully notified.
