Preliminary Medical Findings Identify Cause of Sen. Lindsey Graham’s Death
The District of Columbia Medical Examiner’s Office has released preliminary findings identifying the cause of Sen. Lindsey Graham’s death as an aortic dissection resulting from arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. According to the report, the fatal event was caused by a tear in the aorta, the body’s largest artery, associated with long-term hardening and narrowing of the arteries. Officials noted that the death certificate remains pending the completion of toxicology and microscopic testing.
An aortic dissection is considered one of the most serious cardiovascular emergencies and can occur with little or no warning. The condition develops when a tear forms in the inner layer of the aorta, allowing blood to separate the vessel’s layers and potentially leading to rapid internal bleeding or organ failure. Even with prompt medical intervention, survival rates remain low in many cases.
According to reports, Graham had remained active in his Senate duties in the days leading up to his death. He had recently returned from a trip to Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss continued U.S. support and efforts related to the ongoing conflict with Russia. On the evening before his death, Graham was reportedly engaged in legislative discussions, including conversations regarding election-related legislation.
Medical experts note that arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease often develops gradually over many years, sometimes without noticeable symptoms until a life-threatening event occurs. Public reports have also noted that heart disease affected members of Graham’s family, although physicians caution that multiple factors—including age, genetics, and overall cardiovascular health—can contribute to the development of the condition.
Following the announcement of Graham’s death, political leaders from both parties and several international allies offered tributes recognizing his decades of public service. President Donald Trump, Senate leaders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte were among those who praised Graham’s longstanding commitment to national security and foreign policy.
Graham served South Carolina in the U.S. Senate for more than two decades after a lengthy career in military service. He remained actively engaged in legislative work until his final days, continuing to participate in policy discussions and international affairs.
The Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to issue a final report after additional laboratory testing is completed, formally closing the official investigation into the senator’s death.
