FBI Provides Updates on Mysterious Deaths of Scientists
Reports involving multiple scientists connected to U.S. aerospace, defense, and advanced research programs who have died or gone missing since 2022 are receiving renewed scrutiny after congressional investigators requested information from several federal agencies. Authorities have not confirmed any connection between the cases.
The House Oversight Committee has requested briefings from the FBI, NASA, the Department of Energy, and the Department of Defense regarding at least 11 researchers affiliated with organizations including NASA, SpaceX, and Blue Origin. Committee Chairman James Comer and Rep. Eric Burlison said determining whether the cases share any common factors is important to evaluating potential national security concerns.
In letters to federal officials, the lawmakers stated that, if the reported deaths and disappearances are connected, they could represent a serious threat involving individuals with access to sensitive scientific and technological information. Comer said the committee is working to determine whether the incidents are isolated events or part of a broader pattern that warrants further investigation.
The White House has also acknowledged the matter. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration believes the reports merit review if the underlying claims are accurate. President Donald Trump likewise told reporters that officials were examining the issue while emphasizing that no conclusions had been reached.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the bureau is coordinating with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to investigate the cases. According to Patel, investigators are assessing whether any links exist involving access to classified information, foreign actors, or other potential criminal activity. NASA has also stated that it is cooperating with the relevant agencies while noting that, based on current information, it has found no evidence of a national security threat related to the agency.
The inquiry also includes researchers working across the commercial space and defense sectors, where experts in planetary defense, asteroid tracking, and advanced aerospace technologies comprise a relatively small and highly specialized community.
