Florida Democratic Party Vice Chair Found Dead In Home, Police Arrest Husband

Authorities in Florida are investigating the death of Nancy Metayer Bowen, a local Democratic official and vice mayor of Coral Springs, after she was found dead at her home during a welfare check. Police have arrested her husband, Stephen Bowen, in connection with the case, which investigators are treating as a suspected domestic violence incident. Officials have stated that there are no additional suspects.

Metayer Bowen, first elected to the Coral Springs City Commission in 2020 and re-elected in 2024, was serving her second term as vice mayor. According to reports, she had been preparing to announce a campaign for Congress, seeking the Democratic nomination for Florida’s 20th Congressional District.

Jared Moskowitz confirmed that Metayer Bowen had planned to launch her congressional campaign, with the announcement expected the day after her death. She was reportedly considering a challenge to incumbent Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick.

Cherfilus-McCormick separately faces ongoing federal criminal proceedings and a House ethics investigation. Federal prosecutors allege that she and several co-defendants diverted approximately $5 million in disaster-relief funds connected to a COVID-19 staffing contract and used portions of those funds to support her 2021 congressional campaign. The indictment also includes allegations of conspiracy, money laundering, and filing a false federal tax return. Cherfilus-McCormick has denied the allegations, and her attorney has stated that she intends to contest the charges in court.

In addition to the criminal case, the United States House Committee on Ethics has concluded an investigation into campaign finance and ethics allegations involving the congresswoman. The committee found that multiple violations had occurred and will determine whether to recommend disciplinary action, which could include censure or expulsion from the House. Committee leaders emphasized that a final decision has not yet been made.

Meanwhile, investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding Metayer Bowen’s death. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the ongoing homicide investigation, and Stephen Bowen remains in custody as legal proceedings move forward.
