The RCMP has confirmed the recovery of three additional bodies from the site of a catastrophic mudslide near LillooetB.C., bringing the known fatalities from this specific incident to four. This discovery follows the earlier recovery of a woman’s body on Monday at the same location along Highway 99, also known as Duffey Lake Road. While search and rescue teams have worked tirelessly through the debris, one man remains unaccounted for, leaving families in a state of agonizing uncertainty.

Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet noted that search operations for the final missing individual were officially suspended on Friday after all viable avenues were exhausted. The effort was significantly hampered by adverse weather and increasingly hazardous site conditions, which posed risks to the safety of the responders. The BC Coroners Service, represented by Lapointe, is currently working to formally identify the deceased and notify their next of kin as the community grapples with the scale of the tragedy. The mudslide was part of a series of environmental disasters triggered by extreme rainfall and severe flooding that devastated the southern region of the province last weekend. Lapointe expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims, acknowledging that this has been an “incredibly challenging year” for the residents of British Columbia. The province has faced a barrage of climate-related events that have strained infrastructure and claimed numerous lives. As the immediate search phase concludes, the BC Coroners Service will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding these deaths. The agency aims to establish a factual public record and, where possible, provide recommendations to prevent similar fatalities in the future. The focus now shifts toward recovery efforts and supporting the grieving communities impacted by one of the most severe natural disasters in the region’s history.
